| Praying in Secret
In today s Gospel, Jesus says, pray in secret. When you fast, don’t look gloomy: wash your face, comb your hair, put on a clean shirt. Don’t worry about getting praised by the world. God sees your little sacrifices, and “your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.” Jesus knew human nature well. He knew our tendency toward the wrong kind of martyrdom. He knew our craving to be recognized for our good deeds. He knew how much energy we devote to reacting to the other person, analyzing the other person, and thinking that if only the other person would change, we’d be all right. He knew how hard it is, when we are suffering, to refrain from showing that we are suffering. Al-Anon Family Groups puts out a bookmark called “Just For Today.” One paragraph reads, “Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, keep my voice low, be courteous, criticize not one bit. I won’t find fault with anything, nor try to improve or regulate anyone but myself.” Al-Anon was founded by and for people who love an alcoholic. That is a kind of perpetual, 24/7 fast. That paragraph in “Just For Today” is exactly what Jesus meant in saying, when you fast, don’t look gloomy. Reflection based on Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18 Heather King Most merciful Father, help me to endure my daily slights, distractions, and setbacks without complaining. Help me to refrain from blowing my trumpet of good deeds before me. Today’s suggested penance: Spend fifteen minutes or more praying the holy name of Jesus. From The Magnificat Lenten Companion |
