Only God, with his \u201cinscrutable\u201d ways, could bestow on Peter such clarity in the midst of the many false claims about the identity of Christ. Christ begins to use Peter as an instrument\u2014a Vicar\u2014by which the Lord will open heaven to the world: \u201cHe shall open, and none shall shut\u201d. This shall never happen to you.\u201d\u2014the Lord rebukes him. Why? Because Christ\u2019s death on the cross would fulfil the \u201cgood and acceptable and perfect\u201d will of the Father for our salvation. In union with Jesus, we offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. And no matter how much our sharing in Christ\u2019s cross may make us an object of the world\u2019s laughter and mockery, the love of God is like a fire burning in our heart.
